HTS Classification 101: Why the Right Code Saves You Money

Tarisol · August 12, 2026

Every product you import is assigned an HTS code, and that code does more than describe your goods. It sets your duty rate. Getting classification right is one of the highest-leverage things an importer can do, because a wrong code costs you on every single entry.

What the HTS is

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule is the system that assigns each imported product a code and a corresponding duty rate. It is detailed and hierarchical, and products that look similar can fall under different codes with very different rates.

How classification errors cost you

A misclassified product is charged the wrong rate. If the wrong code carries a higher rate than the correct one, you overpay duty on every shipment until it is fixed. Over a year of entries, a small per-unit error becomes a large total.

The two-way risk

Classification is not only about overpaying. It is also a compliance issue. CBP expects importers to use reasonable care in classifying goods, and inconsistent or aggressive classification can draw scrutiny. Getting it right protects you both financially and from audit exposure.

When to get a second look

If you are unsure whether your products are classified correctly, a specialist review can check. It often surfaces both a fix going forward and a recovery on past overpayments. Use our HTS Code Lookup to see example codes and rates, and start with a free eligibility check if you suspect an error.
